What is the Temperature in Antarctica?
By far the coldest continent, Antarctica has a winter temperature of −128.6 °F (−89.2 °C), the world's lowest recorded temperature, which was measured on July 21, 1983, in the high interior ice sheet at Vostok Station (Russia). −76 °F (−60 °C) near sea level. Weather, temperatures and climate are important considerations when planning a trip to Antarctica. This post describes the Antarctic climate in general.
It provides us with information about the best time to visit Antarctica, with a monthly guide to the Antarctic average temperature, wildlife and daylight. Below, our experts discuss the Antarctic climate, especially with regard to travelers. The most popular destinations for Antarctic cruises include the Antarctic Peninsula climate, the Falklands Islands climate, and the Southern Georgia Islands climate.
Drake Passage: Waves
Several travelers are understandably worried about the sea conditions as well as the Drake Passage tides. These Drake Passage conditions may cause notoriously rough seas. Drake Passage wave heights can vary from 3ft to 40ft. Find out what month is best for reaching the Drake Passage. Getting a forecast of weather conditions before going on a trip is a tad tricky because Drake Passage's forecasts are unpredictable a little over a couple of days ahead.
Drake Passage: Weather
I can't believe Drake Passage's weather can be unpredictable. Almost all weather in the Southern Hemisphere originates in the southern sea. This Drake Passage is located between the oceans and the South Sea. Circumpolar open water and mixing currents combined with powerful winds and varied temperatures create an unpredictable mix of climate and ocean conditions along this route.
Summer travels are expected to include windy conditions as well as rough seas. Passengers crossing the Drake Passage should expect temperatures of 41° in the north to 27° in the south if they travel north.
Antarctica Peninsula Climate & Weather for Travelers
Antarctica lies 810 kilometers north of West Antarctica in South America. This is the northern portion of Iceland that extends northwards of the Antarctic Circle. The shoreline on this ice-covered peninsula is composed by many cliffs carved into beds separated by shallow rivers, perfect to undertake expeditions.
The Antarctic Peninsula lies around 500 km away from Tierra del Fuego, the southernmost point in South America. The Antarctic Peninsula climates are considerably cooler than Antarctica. The northerly inclination and moderate pressure of the ocean make the Antarctic Peninsula's climates the mildest on the continent.
South Georgia Island Climate & Weather for Travelers
South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands are subantarctic islands on the South Atlantic coast. South Georgia Island excursions can boast large colonies of King penguins, seals, and polar bear species. South Georgia Island's climate was declared Subpolar, with cold Summers and a mild winters.
The climate is harsh and extremely unpredictable in this region. The highest temperatures are at sea level 33 F in winter and 47 F in summer. Annual precipitations are around 60 inches and most of them fall as snow or ice. South Georgia Islands have consistent west winds, which may bring rain or snow any time of the year to the area.
Falkland Islands Climate & Weather for Travelers
The Falkland Islands or Islas Malvinas are islands in the South Atlantic Ocean in the South Atlantic Ocean. It is about 200 miles west on the Patagon Coast in South America. This tropical island is maritime with cool summers and mild winters with relatively short annual average temperatures.
The climate of the Falkland Islands strongly influences the arctic Patagonia current. While Falklands is situated in the subarctic area, a low-month average temperature cannot reach above 26 degrees F. Summer averages of heat can reach a temperature of around 50 degrees. Consistent eastward wind occurs year-round averaging 15 knots.

Mawson's research center is centered along the east Antarctic coast. Where the icecap drops steeply in the water? When winter arrives a frightening gravity-fed katabasis wind rumbles down the slope. Mawson's 18 people just suffered blight on a blizzard. During a wind of 125 mph, a gust reached 244 km/h with an increase in wind speed of 148 mph.
Visibility remained zero. During this time, expeditionaries scoured for signs of damage. During the course of the storm, winds pushed full loads into containers and the problem was minimal. In safety, they took ropes or blizzards to move amongst buildings. Video transcript Mawson research station is nestled on the coast of East Antarctica.
Ushuaia Climate & Weather For Travelers
Ushuaia is an island city of southern Argentina, near Tierra del Fuego. It was widely considered the southernmost town on earth. Ushuaia is both entrance into the Antarctic and the embarking point on several Antarctic Cruises. Discover Ushuaiia history and travels to Antarctica.
Ushuaiian climates are subpolar oceanic with cold winter and cool summer. The temperature of Ushuaiana reaches 33 degrees F during mid-summer and 50 degrees F in midsummer. During the summer months, travelers are warned of clouds. Summer high temperatures are around 50F and low 40F at night. It snows often, and rains.
Weather of Antarctica
Antarctic temperatures are very variable. During a short period conditions may change dramatically. Aside from its immense size, Antarctica has weather that can vary by the place you live. Most travelers will come to Antarctica and will also look for Arctic temperatures and other popular locations.
Summer in Antarctica is surprisingly warm. Antarctic Peninsula temperatures average 33 - 36 degrees F during summers. The temperature of the Antarctic Peninsula is rated as being 50F for the summer and the highest for travel.
Winds
Its climate is unique and makes Antarctica the windiest continent in existence. Antarctica is often enclosed by the Low-Pressure Belt that contains several low centers. This has been called "circumpolar troughs". But the continent is under heavy pressure. In these circumstances, katabatic winds were forming.
Katabatic winds originate when radiative cooling at the Antarctic high-level produces very cold and dense air. The cold dense air flows downhill, this air has replaced it with falling air from the top. Katabatic winds accelerate downhill, boosted by a confluence with valley glaciers.
Along with the record for low temperatures, Antarctica has the record for strongest winds. Wind speeds of up to 200 kph are not uncommon, sometimes they exceed 300 kph (180 mph). Maximum speeds are around 360 km/h. Despite its terrible severity this storm is also another obstacle in our daily existence to our daily life.
The blowing normally occurs from the ocean to inland and is more intense during the winter as in the summer owing to the vast difference in temperatures produced between the coast and the inland. Katabatic winds are created when radiative cooling over the elevated Antarctic ice sheet produces very cold, dense air.
Climate of Antarctica
The Antarctic climates are the coldest on the planet. Antarctica are the warmest, drythiest and most windy continents on the planet. Average interior temperatures are average -71 degrees Fahrenheit. The coast is warmer with yearly average temperature around 14°C.
Antarctica is technically desert with average precipitation minus 6.5 cm in diameter. Due to the low snow melt, it forms icebergs and glacier caps. In Antarctica, there is more snowfall and some rain, and there are rainfall of as many as 20 inches each year. Air is dry at low temperatures, leading to low moisture levels.
Climate by Region of Antarctica
Below you find climate charts with average temperatures and daylight in the most popular travel region, including the South Shetland Islands and South Georgia Islands. Find the Antarctic climatic tables with average temperatures, rainfall and daylights for each region. Below the temperatures table, you can get an overview of the Antarctic climate in detail. This climate info is geared for travellers looking for an Antarctic adventure.
South Shetland Islands Climate & Weather for Travelers
The Southern Shetland Islands are an archipal group based around 66 nautical kilometers northeast of Antarctica. It is usually one of the most popular Antarctic islands on Antarctic cruises. In South Shetland Islands the climate is cloudy. The temperature on the South Shetland Islands is similar.
Because the islands' waters are enclosed the weather becomes cooler. Average summer temperatures on South Shetland Island reach around 35°F and 23°F for the winter. Glaciers and ice have been retracted recently, although they cover around 80% of island land.
Precipitation
The damp and evaporating air from Antarctica produces only little clouds. However on the coastline more moisture can be found and low pressure systems are more influential on this situation. Cloudy weather is more common near the coast, especially in Antarctica.
Rains are observed near coastal areas and most snow is collected in the Antarctica. Winds make measuring snowfall difficult. The average accumulation of winter snow across the whole world would be around 150 mm in the year. During the high plateau, annual values can reach only 50 MM.
Index
The North Pole of Antarctica has the coldest continent. This continent is much bigger than Europe and is a little circular. Near the south-polar region the continent is enclosed in three oceans in the southhemisphere Atlantic Pacific, India, and South Africa. The opposite has happened in arctic regions: There is a frozen ocean (the Arctic Ocean) surrounding a continent.
Temperatures
Antarctica is known for its average annual temperature from approximately 0 to 0 degrees Celsius at the coast. Near the coast temperatures can be over +10C in the summer and drop below 40C in the winter. In elevations it can be above 30oC during the year, but can fall below 80°C during the year. On 21 July 1983 Vostok recorded its lowest temperature.
Whiteout
Whiteouts have a visual effect on a person. Uniform lighting conditions can be difficult to distinguish from shadow or landmark or horizon. It is usually when the snow is not broken, and skies are overcast. A Whiteout situation can pose severe danger because it impedes perspective.
Tell me the climate in Antarctica?
Antarctica is larger and wider than Europe, North America and Australia and has no one single climate region but multiple. Because the region is located in the South Pole the climate is cold but there are different zones: Continental Plateau: e.g. Vostok, 72°27S and 106°52'E, average temperature is 55° C and the sea temperature is -45°C.
Continental low plate: Eg. Byrd 80°00'S, 120°00'W, average temperature 260.9°C in the West Antarctic Ice Sheet. 660 kilometers (410 miles) from nearest coastline. Continental high latitude coast: e.g. McMurdo, 70.7°50 S, 66.5°30E average -
Tell me the circumpolar vortex?
The Circumpolar vortex is a large westward windflow built over Antarctica during the winter months in lower layers (stretosphere). They closed off the polar climate and kept temperature down – but not above freezing levels – in Europe and the US.
The hydrocarbon molecule adds to ozone degradation as a result of trapping clouds called "Polar Stratospheric Clouds". These clouds are sometimes called "nacreous" because they appear like shells or mother-of-pearl. The cyclonic vortex splints during spring or summer months.
Does Antarctica influence the climate and weather in the rest of the world?
Antarctic weather has a relatively small impact on the global climate, and ocean waves tend to have more influence on oceanic currents. This helps Antarctica to be colder since its weather is moving from continent to latitude rather than spreading to lower elevations, like the arctic system does.
It has more influence from thermohaline circulations. Thermophiles - heat, hydraelinity salts or minerals. Salty water is more dense and sinkable beneath it, colder water is also denser than warm water and sinks underneath.
Drifting and blowing snow
Looser snow may be taken by wind. When the snow remains below your eye, it is called drifting snow. The snow can be seen from the height. Wind speed above 30khm may cause falling snow. Winds above 50kh are less likely to blow snow. Snowblowing is difficult to find.
What kind of weather does Antarctica experience?
Antarctica is one of Earth's strongest continents with its relative wind intensity at varying elevations a history told by the sailors of the Old Sea. Between 30 degrees S and 50 degrees S Westerly Wind is driven through pole/equator temperature gradients.
Under 60°S the wind is mainly katabatic due to cold air which has gathered on ice sheets over polar plateaus at about 3,000 feet (10,000 ft) but has fallen down the slope. The cold air falls faster as it goes and by the time it falls.
