Nicknamed the mountain region, it is full of recreational opportunities you can take advantage of such as a museum tour and outdoor attractions to see. We want you to have a great time in West Virginia, so that we can make an itinerary for our trip.
01. Grandview State Park (now part of New River Gorge NP)
Grandview State Park is located 1,400 feet above the river and offers many of the most stunning views of the state. Guests are also permitted to see the impressive cultural heritage at the Main Overlook.
Its active railway and town of Quinnimont are visible from the area, where a coal mine was erected in 1873 from the gorge. Another remarkable characteristic are Catawba rhododendrons that flower here near Grandview. Purple catawbaces bloom during summer, and large white rhododydendron flowers in August.
02. Snowshoe Mountain Ski Resort
In Pocahontas County, West Virginia, Snowshoe Mountain ski resort provides an ideal place to spend winter activities in this State. The mountain area offers three excellent skiing areas, over 60 trails and 4 bike trails which allow guests to enjoy several fun activities including tubing, swimming, snowmobiling and biking.
Whatever season you've spent on Snowshoe, you'll have many wonderful activities to enjoy! You may also take off-road travel on the 4-seat Polaris RzR vehicle through the snow-covered mountain scenery.
03. Monongahela National Forest and Seneca Rocks
The Monongahela National Forest boasts beautiful scenery, wildlife and one of the most soaring peak in Texas. There is over 4863 feet of elevation. Despite its large size it has some of the most diverse forest ecosystems of the country and is home to over 225 species, including bird species. The parks encompass approximately 100,500 acres and offers some of the best traditional multipitch technical climbing on the east coast.
04. Snowshoe Mountain Resort — Snowshoe
Snowshoe Dr. Snowshoe, Virginia 26299. Snowshoe Mountains Resort is situated in the Allegheny Mountains and is a famous ski resort. The resort offers 240 acres of skiable terrain and has 15 lift stations.
05. River Gorge National Park
Whatever you do in New River Gorge National Park and Preserve, don't miss the one-of-a-kind Bridge Walk, where guided tours are offered on a catwalk beneath the famous New River Gorge Bridge. Lower New River has Class IV rapids that offer runs past the New River Gorge Bridge.
06. Harpers Ferry National Historical Park
Visiting Harper s Ferry National Park is an opportunity to step back into history while exploring the rich history. This is an interesting West Virginia attraction which provides something for everyone: fascinating museums and displays, hiking and battlefields.
Enjoy walking around this historic town situated within the National Park and enjoying the stunning landscape which makes this ideal for nature lovers and those looking for the historical aspect.
07. Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine and Youth Museum
A very unusual activity on campus in WV is Beckley Exhibition, Coal Mine and Youth Museum. Then you can visit an underground coal mine and visit an old coal camp. This interactive history tour gives a feel of life as a coalminer. Riding the dark passages of the old coal mines is an incredible adventure.
These tours include guided tours with veteran mining workers sharing their experiences and responsibilities as mining employees. The children's museum offers children interactive exhibits and a museum.
08. Blackwater Falls State Park — Davis
Located in the Allegheny Valley in 1937, Black Water Falls State Park is situated on about 2,358 acres. One of the most photogenic places in the whole of West Virginia, Blackwater Falls State Park certainly is majestic; the glorious waterfall that lies at its heart is undoubtedly the highlight of what is on show.
Blackwater Falls State Park is one of the best places for hikers because it's one of the most photogenic places in the park besides Lindy Point pleasant. Blackwater Falls State Park is famous for its 62-foot-tall Blackwater Falls.
Blackwater Falls State Park Named for the dark waters of the Blackwater River, colored by tannic acid from fallen hemlock and red spruce needles, Blackwater Falls drops 60 feet over sandstone ledges before the river continues to rush through an eight-mile-long gorge.
09. Mothman Museum and Festival
In 1966 the report was published of lights in the sky as well as of strange flying figures. There were numerous reports of the figures but many said they were portrayed as black-clad and with red eyes. A local legend emerged about Mothman.
Pop culture began accepting it as stories of moths spread and the city turned a legend of the tale into museum statues and a Mothman Festival. This popular free celebration runs the third week in September and features costumes and activities along with vendors selling souvenirs featuring bats-like cartoons Mothman.
10. Green Bank Observatory
West Virginia offers excellent views into outer space thanks to low inference. The GreenBank Observatory is primarily used to conduct space research and observation, but has evolved into a fun learning space for adults and children. Green Bank Observatory started in Green Bank in 1956, and started operating only after 1958.
It was once the headquarters of the National Radio & Astronomic Observatory, and is now independently operated. There are several radio telescopes that measure radio waves received from space. The GreenBank Telescope is the most fully steerable radio telescope on the globe at 300 feet.
11. Cass Scenic Railroad State Park
On a line from 1909 to 1909 that was built to transport lumber out of the forest to a mill, you can recollect the Golden Age of Steam. This entire 4.5-hr journey contains switchbacks which allow trains to climb grades up to 10 percent to reach Bald Knob.
It is West Virginia's third highest mountain and offers breathtaking views. A logging camp of 1940 recreates on Whittaker Station. In the base, you'll visit museums and depots and visit restored companies houses rented to stay overnight.
12. West Virginia Penitentiary — Moundsville
The West Virginia Penitentiary was built in 1876 and operated from the 1870s to the 1990s from the beginning of the century. This building has gothic architecture and a very well-known attraction.

13. Cathedral Falls
Immediately after it crosses New River, Cane Brook drops to more than 900 feet from Mount Pleasant. The lower 60-meter plunge is easily visible from a stop along Route 60. This waterfall, surrounded by overhanging trees and bushes, is a favourite among photographers especially during Fall when the hardwoods are in autumn colours. The waters drop in a canyon that stretches along an uncharted valley and falls over sandstone ledges in sloping sequences.
14. Berkeley Springs State Park
This gorgeous village of Berkeley Springs is an excellent destination for visitors throughout West Virginia. There are Berkeley Springs State Parks, which consists of parkland that surrounds the town's spa and mineral water cultural attractions.
The spring water is 70°C and has a natural cure capacity. This is especially popular among patients suffering from digestive issues. The park has a variety of bathrooms for your pleasure where you can have an enjoyable bath or a massage.
15. Greenbrier State Forest
Greenbrier State Forest is the biggest attraction in West Virginia. This beautiful park is set in over 5000 acres of unexploited forest that is ideal for visiting family and friends or even on a solo vacation.
The forest offers miles upon miles of pristine beauty lined with hike trails, biking paths and more. An ideal option would be to stay for an hour at one or two of the campgrounds in the wooded area. The forests are most well-known for their hiking paths. Most particularly the Trail runs between Lewisburg and White Sulphur Springs, an area of over six miles.
16. West Virginia State Museum at the Culture Center
One of the free activities in West Virginia includes visiting the West Virginia State Museum to explore its cultural history, art and history. Possibly its most famous artefact is a pair of costumed flea animals gathered in the circus of the late 19th century.
There are a couple of fantastic museums for you to check out, such as the Avampato Discovery Museum and the West Virginia State Museum. Well designed shows of special interest literally walk through the state's history starting from rock and sand to ending at an asphalt highway.
Using audio recordings the visitors can move through the ages and add additional audio and video displays. Artifacts include everyday objects including astronomy instruments used by President Washington to map the land around West Virginia.
17. Huntington Museum of Art & Ritter Park
In addition to the 10 gallery rooms, Huntington museums also offer two outdoor sculpture parks and two miles of hiking. The quarter-mile paved Sensory Trail accommodates the visually impaired. In its 5,000 objects – including art and sculptures – the Museum has over 16,000 pieces.
18. Lost World Caverns
Lost World Caves located 125 feet beneath the earth are the Lost World Caves of West Virginia. A popular attraction in West Virginia, the Caverns host incredible rock formations that can be seen. Visitors can enjoy the formation through guided tours of the formations that take the tourists around one quarter mile.
During your tour you will encounter world-famous stalactites and crystal formations. Among the popular features of the attraction is the “Bridal Veils”, the 28 ft stalagmites you will need to see in real life.
19. Gauley River National Recreation Area
This Gauley River National Recreation Area comprises 25km of Gauley Rivers and 6 miles of Meadows Rivers that both flow through scenic valleys and gorges, displaying varied landscapes and cultural features.
As the summer dam water release happens in September, white water rafters flock to the Gauley River for a thrilling experience that many people regard as the best raft experience in the World. Gauley River also has some uncommon vegetation types, as well as Virginia Spiraea Blue Violet appalachian Blue Violet Balsam squaw weed.
20. Hawks Nest State Park
Hawks Nest State Park is a recreational park encompassing a 270-acre nature center, aerial tramway hiking trails, jetboat excursions and an unexplored whitewater raft. The lodge has 31 rooms, well-equipped suite rooms, fine dining and a large number of meetings.
Hawks Nest offers an impressive view of the New River Gorge National River just 10 miles south. Although rafting is sure to keep you occupied, Hawk Nest State Park has numerous activities that you can take part in.
21. Grandview State Park
Finch - Shutterstock. If you want a good place to visit in West Virginia you should take a few days to Grandview state park. One of the best attractions in the state, it's a great location for sightseeing, leisure, outdoor activities or just relaxing.
One of the park's most interesting attractions is the scenic overlook looking across the spectacular scenery of the New River and an incredibly active railway station. The walkers will travel across rhododendron forests and other colourful vegetation. Grandview State Park has a number of outdoor activities that can be enjoyed.
22. Stonewall Jackson Lake State Park
It includes publicly accessible hunting and fishing lands at the foot of the dams. Stonewall Resort, Briar Point Campground and Stonewall Marina all lie within the parks. Visit Stonewall Jackson Lake Park's visitor center offers a wide variety of exhibits on all things Jackson Lake.
It is a quiet retreat within Stonewall Jackson Resort State Park located only three miles off Interstate 79. There are facilities for children and adults. This includes the Adirondack-style lodging and cottage facilities, camping, a variety of recreational activities, and 3 restaurants.
23. Clay Center for the Arts and Sciences
Clay Arts Center was established as an arts and science institution in 2003. It hosts performances and visual arts exhibits, education, science and engineering activities. This program will support and promote creative exploration, discovery, and education using arts and sciences.
The center, located within Charleston WV's capital, is home to two museums and art galleries. The Juliet art museum hosts touring artists and other art from across the country. The Avampatta Discovery Center is a 3-floor museum that offers a wide variety of interactive activities.
24. Coopers Rock State Forest
Coopers Rock State Forest opened in 1936 offers some of the Almost Heavens finest views. The park is located approximately 15 miles from Morgantown and close to Highway 68 and has canyon views, picnic facilities, historic sites, 50 miles of walking and bicycling trails, sandstone cliffs to climb and cross-country skiing areas. The main gate for Cooper's Rock State Forest was closed from January 1st through February. The park is accessible by walk and bike.
25. Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum — Weston
Weston, WV 26552, 302-469-5069 The Trans Alleganous Lunatic Asylum, built between 1858 and 1881, was once a hospital but has become one of the most visited tourist attractions. The building has been designated National Historic Landmark and has incorporated Tudor Revival style buildings and Tudor style.
26. Wonderment Puppet Theatre
Wonderment Puppet Theatre Wonderment Puppet Theater provides wonderful attractions for children. The theatre is basically the perfect and interactive platform aimed at the performers and the audiences.
The Theatre offers six diverse and incredibly fun performances that audiences love. Before and after performances, the audience will have an opportunity to create the puppet shows themselves. Another fun attraction at Wonderment Puppeting Theatre includes balloons to fit every kid, a photo booth, a gallery, and more.
27. Oglebay Resort

West Virginia State Capitol in Charleston Charleston is also home to hip art galleries located on the downtown riverfront, including boutique and vinyl record shops alongside cozy, small restaurants.
29. Appalachian National Scenic Trail
The Appalachian National Scenic Trail is one of the most well-known hiking trails in the US. It extends from Maine to Georgia and passes directly through West Virginia, which many people consider the midpoint. The Appalachian National Scenic Trail consists of more than 2,000 miles of footpath. The trail is scenic, serene, pastoral, and altogether amazing.
30. Seneca Rocks State Park
Seneca Rocks State Park is one of the most impressive and recognizable natural sights in the whole of West Virginia, the distinctive Seneca Rocks lie at the heart of a wonderful state park of the same name; they are definitely worth checking out if you want to go rock climbing or hiking in a pristine setting.
